Two policies that protect the day, the venue, and the deposits.
Wedding insurance in Kentucky.
Cancellation and liability coverage for Kentucky weddings — Keeneland, the Bluegrass barns, downtown Lexington venues, and your backyard reception.
A Kentucky wedding can run $30,000 to $80,000 by the time you total venue, catering, photographer, dress, rentals, hotel blocks, and rehearsal dinner. A single thing going wrong — vendor bankruptcy, severe weather, a guest injury, an alcohol-related incident — can wipe out deposits, trigger lawsuits, or end the day in disaster. Wedding insurance from Nova Insurance Group covers the two big risk buckets every Kentucky couple needs to think about: cancellation and liability.
What is wedding insurance?
Wedding insurance is two policies sold together. Wedding cancellation insurance (also called event insurance) reimburses you for non-refundable deposits and rebooking costs when something forces you to postpone or cancel. Wedding liability insurance protects you if a guest is injured, property is damaged, or an alcohol-related incident leads to a claim. Most Kentucky venues now require the liability piece by contract.
Why Kentucky weddings need both coverages.
- Venue contracts demand it: Keeneland, Talon Winery, the Kentucky Castle, the Mansion at Griffin Gate, Saltlick Springs, the Stable at Hunter Valley Farm, Warrenwood Manor, and almost every Bluegrass barn venue require couples to provide a $1 million Certificate of Insurance naming the venue as Additional Insured. Without it, your booking is canceled.
- Kentucky weather is unpredictable: Severe thunderstorms, ice storms, tornado warnings, and once-in-a-decade weather events have all cancelled Central Kentucky weddings in recent years. Wedding cancellation coverage pays your deposits back so you can rebook.
- Vendor failures happen: When a Lexington-area photographer goes out of business between deposit and wedding day, or a caterer cancels two weeks out, or a DJ doesn’t show, cancellation insurance pays for the replacement vendor.
What wedding insurance covers.
- Wedding cancellation / postponement: Reimburses non-refundable deposits when the wedding has to be cancelled or postponed for covered reasons: severe weather, sudden illness, military deployment, a death in the immediate family, vendor bankruptcy, venue closure, or transportation breakdown. Coverage limits typically run $7,500–$50,000.
- Wedding liability: Pays for bodily injury or property damage to a third party — a guest tripping on a loose stone at a Lexington estate venue, a child knocking over a wine glass onto a $30,000 dress, damage to the venue itself. Standard limits are $1 million per occurrence / $2 million aggregate.
- Liquor liability (host liquor): Most venues require liquor liability if alcohol is being served. Covers the couple if a guest causes injury or damage tied to alcohol consumption. We add this on every Kentucky wedding policy where alcohol is served.
- Lost deposits and rentals: Reimburses you when a vendor goes out of business, fails to show, or delivers non-refundable goods that can’t be used because of a covered cancellation.
- Special attire and gifts: Damage to the wedding gown, tuxedos, bridesmaid dresses, and gifts before, during, and immediately after the ceremony.
- Photographs and video: If photos or video are lost or damaged before delivery, the policy can pay for a re-shoot.
How much does wedding insurance cost in Kentucky?
Kentucky wedding liability insurance typically costs $125–$235 for $1 million in coverage. Adding host liquor coverage runs another $50–$100. Wedding cancellation insurance runs $150–$550 depending on the total wedding cost being protected. Most Kentucky couples spend $300–$700 total for both pieces — a fraction of one percent of the wedding budget.
When to buy wedding insurance.
As soon as you put down deposits. The cancellation portion can only reimburse deposits paid after the policy effective date, so buying right after you book the venue is the right move. Most Kentucky couples buy 9–12 months before the wedding date. Liability-only certificates can be issued 30 days out if you only need the venue COI. (A wedding is also one of the life events worth a full coverage check — see our piece on when to review your insurance coverage in Kentucky.)

Frequently asked questions.
Is wedding insurance required in Kentucky?
Kentucky law doesn’t require wedding insurance, but most Kentucky wedding venues do. Keeneland, Talon Winery, the Kentucky Castle, the Mansion at Griffin Gate, and most Bluegrass barn venues require couples to provide a Certificate of Insurance — typically $1 million in liability with the venue named as Additional Insured.
How much does wedding insurance cost in Kentucky?
Most Kentucky couples pay $300–$700 total for cancellation and liability coverage combined. Liability-only policies are $125–$235. Cancellation coverage runs $150–$550 depending on the wedding budget being protected.
Does wedding insurance cover the bride or groom getting cold feet?
No. Cancellation insurance does not pay if the wedding is called off because the bride or groom changes their mind. Cancellation coverage is for unforeseen events outside the couple’s control — illness, death, weather, vendor failure, venue closure, military deployment.
Does wedding insurance cover rain or weather in Kentucky?
Yes — cancellation insurance covers weather severe enough to make the wedding impossible (a tornado warning, a roads-closed ice storm, hurricane-force winds for an outdoor event). It does not cover ordinary rain. We can also add extreme-weather endorsements for outdoor Bluegrass weddings during peak severe-weather months.
Does wedding insurance cover the rehearsal dinner and after-party?
Yes. Most Kentucky wedding policies include the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, and post-event cleanup as part of one continuous event — usually covering 24–48 hours surrounding the wedding date. We’ll confirm dates on the policy and add additional venues as needed.
How fast can I get a wedding Certificate of Insurance for my Kentucky venue?
Same day, in most cases. Nova can bind a wedding liability policy and issue the Certificate of Insurance with your venue listed as Additional Insured within hours. Call 859-687-2004 if your venue is asking for the COI now.
